William ‘Buddy’ Gillespie

Mr. Gillespie is Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at WellSpan Health, an integrated delivery system based in York, Pennsylvania. WellSpan Health serves the health care needs of more than 500,000 people in south central Pennsylvania. WellSpan has been named a Top 100 Most Wired and a Top 25 Best Connected health system three-years running. In 2006, WellSpan received the Courion Vision Award for its strategic approach to Identity Management. In 1999, and again in 2002, WellSpan was recognized by Cerner as a Top Five Recipient of the PowerChart Innovation Award.Mr. Gillespie joined WellSpan Health in 1996 as Vice President and Chief Information Officer, coming from a position of Vice President of Information Services at Allegheny General Hospital, in Pittsburgh. Prior to that, he was Director of Hospital Applications Development at Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, Tennessee. As CIO of WellSpan he was responsible for the strategic planning and implementation of information technology to support integrated applications consisting of financial, clinical and administrative systems.In September of 2008, Mr. Gillespie was appointed Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for WellSpan. In the CTO role, Mr. Gillespie is responsible for the strategic and tactical efforts surrounding the selection, implementation and support of core technology to support the business and clinical systems at WellSpan.Mr. Gillespie has delivered presentations and workshops at the NMHCC, HIMSS, HFMA, MIT, PAeHI and HAP conferences. Mr. Gillespie is the author and contributor of numerous articles and was featured on the cover of CIO and Advance Magazines. Mr. Gillespie serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Advance Magazine, the Penn State York IT Advisory Council, the WYSE, CxTEC and the Courion Customer Advisory Boards and the Pennsylvania e-Health Initiative Board where he also serves as Chair of the Health Information Exchange SIG.Mr. Gillespie holds degrees in physics and math from Athens University and has been active in Healthcare Information Technology for over 25 years. He is an active member of CHIME, HIMSS, SIM, and PMI.
