The California Society of CPAs Education Foundation conducted the second annual California Cannabis Industry Symposium Aug. 1 in Los Angeles, covering how financial advisors can serve cannabis growers, distributors and retailers. The symposium was held at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, and via webcast.

QuickFee, Santa Monica, joined CPAmerica International as a preferred provider for the accounting association.

FLORIDA

AuditSense, Tampa, joined CPAmerica International as a preferred provider for the accounting association.

Baker Tilly Virchow Krause held its third annual Stewardship Day on Augjust 1, a day of service for the firm’s team members around the country to volunteer with more than 70 nonprofit organizations in 30 cities.

The Maryland Association of CPAs named its 2018-19 board of directors. Samantha Bowling, a partner at Garbelman Winslow CPAs, Upper Marlboro, was named chair for a one-year term that began July 1. MACPA also named Ray Speciale, associate professor at Mount St. Mary’s University as vice chair; as secretary/treasurer, Avonette Blanding, CFO at Maritime Applied Physics Corporation; and as immediate past chair, Ken Kelly, consultant at KK Advisory. MACPA also named the following as directors: Christine Aspell, managing partner/audit partner at KPMG; Matt Cissell, CEO, president and director at KatzAbosch; Jeffrey Cook, principal at Coalfire Systems; Leon Katsnelson, director and CTO of strategic partnerships for data science at IBM; Andrew page, vice president/corporate controller at Under Armour; Keith Parker, financial advisor at Morgan Stanley; Karen Syrylo, owner of Karen T. NEW JERSEY

The Institute of Management Accountants announced the appointment of Virginia White as chair of its global board of directors for its 2018-19 fiscal year and Linda Devonish-Mills as its first director of diversity and inclusion.

NEW YORK

The New York State Society of CPAs and the New York Council of Nonprofits announced the 15th annual Michael H. Urbach CPA Community Builders Award, presented to candidates who have: served as an officer on at least three different charitable 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofits with service as president/chair at least once; demonstrated exemplary board leadership resulting in significant and positive organizational impact; and with preference given to nominees whose board leadership accomplishments have been with community-based charities. Nominations addressing the candidate’s qualifications must be submitted in writing and received by Aug. 31, 2018. Submissions can be submitted online here.

LBMC Information Security, Nashville, announced that it is carving out Provincia Government Solutions as a separate entity, with Provincia CEO Sese Bennett leading the new entity through the HUBZone and 8(a) certification process and its strategic direction. Thomas Lewis, CEO of LBMC Information Security LLC, will oversee the partnership between the two companies.
