ALABAMA

Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith, Birmingham, was ranked No. 1 in the large company category for the second consecutive year on the Best Places to Work in Birmingham list, joining 35 other finalist companies recognized at a luncheon hosted by Birmingham Business Journal May 11.

The California Society of CPAs officially opened its new headquarters in a refurbished three-story building at 1710 Gilbreth Road, Burlingame. CalCPA has moved about 100 employees from its previous offices in San Mateo to the new facility, which will also house the CalCPA Education Foundation.

CONNECTICUT

BlumShapiro, West Hartford, welcomed West Hartford high school students to the firm’s offices in West Hartford Center, along with other businesses in the center, to kick off JA Career Walk, which gives students an overview of the firm and the types of occupations and employees within it. Additionally, BlumShapiro was recognized with the 2017 When Work Works Award for exceptional workplace practices, marking the second consecutive year the firm was honored by the Society for Human Resource Management’s national When Work Works project.

For the ninth consecutive year, Windham Brannon, Atlanta, awarded grant scholarships to seven Atlanta college accounting students, bestowing a total of $9,500 to students based on academic performance and leadership qualities. For the Windham Brannon Excellence in Accounting Scholarship ($1,500 each) the recipients were: Aiko Hollingsworth, University of Georgia; Suzanne Clay, University of Georgia. For the Ben Brannon Scholarship ($1,300): Stephanie Mivesk, the University of West Georgia. For the Bill Bomar Scholarship ($1,300): Cody McQuillen, University of North Georgia. For the Fred Windham Scholarship ($1,300): Melissa Turvy, Kennesaw State University. For the Jim Duval Scholarship ($1,300): Jonathan Sauls, LaGrange College. Bloomberg BNA, Arlington, announced its 2016 outstanding authors in federal taxation and the recipient of the of the 2016 Leonard L. Silverstein Award for Distinguished Service in Tax. Howard Rothman of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Fankel LLP was the recipient of the Silverstein Award, named after the founder of the Tax Management Portfolios, for his long-standing contributions to the field of tax. The outstanding authors of the year were Carlos Gonzalez of BenefitsPuertoRico.com and Grace Kim and Racquel Saunders of Grant Thornton. Carlos Gonzalez received the Federal Tax Portfolio Author of the Year award for his work on Tax Management Portfolio 324, International Pension Planning-Puerto Rico, about the legal rules, practices and principles governing the establishment, qualification, operation and termination of retirement plans in Puerto Rico and the taxation of retirement benefits from qualified and nonqualified plans and equity-based compensation arrangements. Grace Kim and Racquel Saunders were recognized as the 2016 Federal Tax Contributors of the year for their article “Redeeming a Partner with the Partnership’s Note” which was featured in Tax Management Memorandum.
