CALIFORNIA

René Lacerte, CEO and founder of Bill.com, received the Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 Award in Financial Services in Northern California from EY, for his commitment to innovation and development in his company and community. Selected by an independent panel of judges, Lacerte was presented with the award at a special gala event in San Jose on June 23.

CONNECTICUT

Leslie Zoll, principal at BlumShapiro, West Hartford, created nonprofit Family Promise of Central Connecticut with co-founder Kara Russell, Connecticut’s first affiliate of the national organization that uses places of worship to help families with children remain intact and become self-sufficient. Created in 2015, the organization received a $10,000 donation from the Catalyst Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain in 2016 and in June 2017, they opened a Family Promise Day Center at 40 Cornelius Way in New Britain. The Family Promise Day Center enables participant families to spend the day looking for housing and employment, while having a stable address for resume and school registration. It currently includes 11 host congregations of all denominations, 7 supporting congregations, more than 100 volunteers and an additional 350 trained people.

NEW YORK

The New York State Society of CPAs’ Foundation for Accounting Education appointed sour society members to its board of trustees: Steve Mezzio, professor of accounting at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business, as president; Kevin Matz, a trusts and estates partner at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, as president elect; Denise Stefano, associate professor and the accounting department chair at Mercy College, to serve on the board; and Frank Aquilino, acting associate dean and former chair of the Accounting, Law and Taxation Department at Montclair State University, as a member. All four terms began on June 1, 2017.

Chris Halterman, executive director of advisory services at EY, New York, was given a Special Recognition Award from the American Institute of CPAs for his work on AICPA Assurance Services Executive Committee, contributions to ASEC’s Trust Information Integrity Task Force, and leadership of ASEC’s Cybersecurity Working Group.
