William Chapman, an undergraduate student at James Madison University, was awarded Beta Alpha Psi’s Medal of Inspiration Award, sponsored by the American Institute of CPAs and presented at the honor organization’s annual meeting in Anaheim. The award is bestowed to a student who has experienced extreme hardships and demonstrated an unusually high level of success despite that adversity, and includes a $5,000 cash stipend. Now a high performing student and community leader, Chapman battled Post Traumatic Distress Disorder after serving in the Marines in Afghanistan, for which he was awarded the Honor of the Purple Heart. At JMU, Chapman earned a spot on the Dean’s List, tutored his fellow students, and worked with the Skyline Literacy program to help refugees studying for their naturalization test. He was also recognized at the James Madison University - Evening of Excellence for earning nearly 100 percent in his accounting principles classes, and will be serving on the executive board of his Beta Alpha Psi chapter, on track to become chapter president.
Panos Patatoukas, associate professor at Berkeley-Haas, won the won the 2017 Notable Contributions to Accounting Literature Award, sponsored by the American Institute of CPAs and recognizing his article, “Customer-Base Concentration: Implications for Firm Performance and Capital Markets,” which appeared in The Accounting Review in 2012. The award, which includes $2,500, was announced at the American Accounting Association Annual Meeting in San Diego Aug. 8. (Read the

Emilio Escandon was promoted to managing principal in the New York office of MBAF, with full oversight of the firm’s regional operations in Manhattan and Valhalla, while continuing his duties as principal-in-charge of national operations for the tax and accounting department.
Jan Sylvis, who recently served on the Governmental Accounting Standards Board and was named GASB vice chair in January 2015, was given the 2017 Outstanding CPA in Government Career Contribution Award by the American Institute of CPAs, honoring her lifelong contribution to the profession. Gloria Jarmon, deputy inspector general for Audit Services who leads independent audits of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was awarded the AICPA’s 2017 Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Award at the federal level. The AICPA’s 2017 Government Impact Award at the local level was bestowed on Timothy O’Brien, who was elected in 2015 to a four-year term as the auditor of the City and County of Denver. Both Government Impact awards recognize the impact of recent significant contributions of CPAs to the efficiency, effectiveness or innovative service delivery of their respective local, state or federal employer organizations. The awards were presented at the AICPA’s 33rd annual National Governmental Accounting and Auditing Update Conference Aug. 7 in Washington, D.C.
Preston Quesenberry was appointed managing director in the exempt organizations tax group at KPMG, joining from the law firm Loeb & Loeb, where he advised nonprofit and tax-exempt clients on a wide variety of legal and strategic issues.
