The American Institute of CPAs announced on Monday that five college graduate students have been awarded the 2017-2018 AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship. The annual scholarship awards students $5,000 each for transitioning from a liberal arts or non-business background to pursuing a graduate accounting degree and CPA licensure.

The scholarship is funded by the titular John Carey, who retired from the AICPA in 1969 and was a vocal advocate for students of all academic backgrounds to consider becoming CPAs.

“The backgrounds of this year’s John L. Carey Scholarship recipients highlight that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ pathway to enter the accounting profession and earn your CPA license,” stated AICPA Foundation president and former AICPA chairman Randy Fletchall. “The unique perspectives these future CPAs have as a result of their non-traditional educational path to the profession will serve them well in the future.”

Scholarship applications are reviewed by a task force comprised of AICPA Student Recruitment Committee members and CPA volunteers. Applicants must be full-time graduate students with a GPA of at least 3.0 and must not have earned more than 12 credits in accounting or business during their time as undergraduates. Applicants are also judged on academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to becoming a CPA.

The 2017-18 John L. Carey Scholarship recipients are as follows:

  • Christopher Broughton, Harvard University
  • Christian Kohlmann, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Kevin Millian, Rutgers University - Newark
  • Madeline Porter, The University of California, Davis
  • Tom Tamir, The University of Texas at Austin
