Forensic Accounting Services LLC, Glastonbury, recently awarded Stratford High School studentMeagan Simon a scholarship in recognition of her interest in becoming a CPA and pursuing a career in forensic accounting. Simon plans to attend Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire and major in accounting and criminal justice to be a CPA and forensic accountant, which she hopes will eventually lead her to a career with the FBI.

 

MARYLAND

Larry Devitt has launched CapellaTax Network, Baltimore, to offer group pre-paid tax preparation and advice services. Through CapellaTax Network, employers can offer employees discounted access to a network of CPAs for tax preparation and year-round tax advice.

 

NEW YORK

KPMG LLP, New York City, announced that it has achieved a 22 percent carbon reduction over three years from its 2007 baseline target as part of its "Living Green" program, launched in 2008. The firm also claimed to have reduced its non-recycled waste by 51 percent, air travel by 26 percent, and office energy usage by 7 percent.

PENNSYLVANIA

Citrin Cooperman, Philadelphia, raised $15,652 in support of the American Cancer Society's 2011 Relay For Life of Ocean City, N.J., in late June. Citrin Cooperman's team of 20 members gathered at Ocean City High School and took turns walking and running around the school's track in honor of the society's mission to eliminate and prevent cancer. Partner Jeffrey Gittler led the charge in the Philadelphia office, raising more than $12,000 and encouraging his co-workers to support the effort.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, Washington, D.C., announced the launch of its PCAOB Scholarship Program. The program will award 52 scholarships of $10,000 each, and will be administered and managed by ACT Inc., Iowa City, Iowa. As mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, funds for the scholarships come from monetary penalties imposed by the board. The board has released the names of the 52 recipient institutions; their names, as well as eligibility requirements and other details, are available on the PCAOB Web site, www.pcaobus.org.
