HealthSouth Names New CFO

Workman, who will assume his new duties on Sept. 20, will be responsible for the financial operations of the company. Sansone, a managing director with the turnaround firm Alvarez & Marsal, has been acting CFO since March 2003 and will transition out of the position over the next couple of months, according to the company.

Five of the health care company's former CFOs pleaded guilty to fraud charges in the enormous accounting scandal that engulfed it. A report made public in June identified $2.7 billion of fraudulent entries in HealthSouth's accounting system.

Workman, 53, who began his career in public accounting at KPMG, where he became a partner, most recently served as chief executive U.S. Can Co., a manufacturer of aerosol and general line cans. During his six-year tenure with the company, he also served as CFO. He also spent more than 14 years with retailer Montgomery Ward & Co. Inc., serving as chief financial officer and executive vice president and chief restructuring officer.
