Interim Filing Stats Up

Washington (March 20, 2003) -- Tax pros still complete the majority of returns -- 25,740,000 out of 33,262,000 so far this tax season--but self-prepared e-filed returns are up 28.6 percent over last year at this time.

Except for TeleFile (phone filing) all other categories of filing are also up through the week ending March 15, compared to the similar time period last year.

Total receipts are at 60,721,000, a .6 percent increase over last year, while e-filing receipts reached 36,322,000, nearly 10 percent better than last year, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The number of refunds increased 2.8 percent over last year's figures, with an average refund of $2,050 at $46 more than last year's average refund of $2,004.  The number of direct deposit refunds increased by 10.9 percent over last year's figures at a comparable time.
