IRS Revs Up Online Refund Project

Tracking a federal tax refund check will soon be as easy as tracking a UPS package. That’s the goal of the Internal Revenue Service’s new Internet-based service that promises to give taxpayers access to their refund status via the Internet.

The Web application is being piloted right away and is expected to be fully operational for the 2003 filing season.

To herald the news, the agency this week moved the pilot project to the front page of www.IRS.gov in order to test its ability to handle a large volume of users. Taxpayers who filed Form 1040, Form 1040-A or Form 1040-EZ and are due a refund may use the application.
