NYSE Courts Former J.P. Morgan Head as Chair

New York (Jan. 7, 2004) -- Following the recent appointment of John Thain as chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange, the Big Board is attempting to recruit former J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. head Dennis Weatherstone to become chairman.

According to published reports, the 73-year-old Weatherstone would succeed acting chairman John Reed, who has served in that capacity since September following the resignation of Richard Grasso.

Last month, Weatherstone was named to the NYSE board.

Grasso departed the exchange after his compensation package of $188 million was made public.
