PCAOB announces 2017-18 scholarships

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board announced last week that 167 college accounting students will receive $10,000 in merit-based scholarships to help them pursue audit careers.

Now in its seventh year, the PCAOB’s scholarship program looks to annually gift one student from each participating academic institution. Funds are made possible through the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which sees monetary penalties applied via the PCAOB used to fund a merit scholarship program.

"This award continues to provide financial assistance to future accountants and we hope it inspires them to pursue a career in auditing and advance investor protection," stated PCAOB chairman James Doty. "The achievements of nearly 600 students have been recognized since the inception of the scholarship program."

Qualified students must be enrolled in an accounting bachelor's or master's degree program at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university; show appropriate interest and skill in accounting and auditing; and demonstrate high ethical standards. Participating institutions are also encouraged to consider awarding students who they deem underrepresented in the accounting field today.
