SEC chief accountant for enforcement Michael Maloney departing

Michael F. Maloney, the chief accountant at the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement, is leaving the SEC in February.

Maloney has led the enforcement division’s Office of Chief Accountant for four years, since February 2014.

During his tenure, the SEC has initiated proceedings against firms such as BDO USA, Grant Thornton, Ernst & Young and KPMG, as well as companies such as Monsanto, Weatherford, Penn West Petroleum and ITT Educational Services.

“It has been the honor of my career to work with the incredibly talented and dedicated enforcement accountants and attorneys who work every day to protect investors on the division’s complex and challenging financial reporting matters,” Maloney said in a statement. “I am very proud of the results that the division has achieved on financial reporting matters over the past four years.”

Maloney joined the SEC from Navigant Consulting, where he was a managing director and led Navigant’s forensic accounting practice. He was previously a partner at Arthur Andersen. The SEC did not say who would be succeeding Maloney or where he will be going next.
