UHY trucked in meditation during busy season

Top 100 Firm UHY Advisors took an unusual approach to bringing some relief to busy staff members this tax season, inviting MeditationWorks, a mobile meditation space, to help its professionals mentally focus and deal with stress.

Describing itself as the "Food Truck for Your Brain," MeditationWorks brings a small, private space to businesses to help professionals find some mental clarity with the help of a guide.

“Accounting and finance require really high-level brain function," said Joanne Leider, director of Meditation Works, in a statement. “The brain becomes accustomed to a hyper-vigilant state of constant 'doing/working.' This state of mind triggers stress, giving us the energy and drive to get things done. Meditation allows us to enter a state of 'non-doing' where the thoughts and urges arise but are not accompanied by constant action. The brain soon learns to notice stress building and respond with relaxation and focus. It’s this brief, simple exercise that gives the brain a restorative break that strengthens function instead of depleting it.”

“At UHY, we are always striving to find ways to help our employees achieve balance," stated Debi Ritter, the firm's director of human resources. "This can happen in many ways such as work schedules, types of work and being able to calm one’s mind during a very stressful time of year. We try to find unique ways to support our employees' physical and mental health.”
