University of Oregon plans new School of Accounting

The University of Oregon’s Lundquist College of Business announced this week that the university plans to upgrade its Department of Accounting to its own School of Accounting, effective July 1.

Provost and senior vice president of the university Scott Coltrane noted the decision in a collegiate memo this week.

“The Department of Accounting is home to UO faculty members who stand apart among peers across the country in their teaching and research excellence," he stated. "Having a separate school exposes accounting students to the concept and meaning of being in a profession focused on high ethical standards, self-responsibility, continuous learning and development, collegiality, autonomy, and independence.”

Currently, accounting serves as both an undergraduate major and degree at the College of Business, the only department at the school to do so. Lundquist also has two accreditations for its accounting and business programs, joining only 1.9% of other universities accredited to the two subjects by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

“The University of Oregon accounting department has a longstanding reputation for academic excellence,” stated Angela Davis, professor and current head of the Department of Accounting. “My colleagues and I are honored by this recognition and thank our advisory board, Accounting Circle, employers, alumni and donors who contribute to our curricular development and supported our efforts to become a School of Accounting.”
