Stories like this make our day.

Halloween may be long gone but the treats left over from that day ended up being the gifts that keep on giving – for a New York firm and overseas soldiers.

Michele McNamara, a manager at Syosset, N.Y.-based CPA firm Feldman, Meinberg and Company LLP, learned that she could send her leftover Halloween candy to Operation Shoebox, an organization that sends snacks, personal care items, periodicals and games to American troops serving overseas.

But McNamara didn’t stop there. She ended up adopting three soldiers.

She thought it would be fun to get her colleagues at the firm as well as her friends and family involved in the project. And their response was immediate and enthusiastic. Letters, children’s drawings and purchased items for the soldiers came rolling in.

Now the CPA firm sends weekly letters and monthly care packages to the adopted soldiers.

“I had thought about doing this in the past but what moved me about Operation Shoebox was that I was provided with a name and address and would have direct contact with this person,” McNamara said.
