TSCPA chapter honored for financially advising military families

The Texas Society of CPAs San Antonio chapter was honored with the Texas Credit Union League Focus Award for its financial literacy work.

The award recognizes individuals, credit unions, chapters, organizations and foundations that “best exemplify the philosophy of people helping people through financial education.”

The TSCPA San Antonio chapter is involved in Operation Home Front Village, which serves medically retired military families by helping transition them into rent-free living for three to nine months, until their full medical board reviews and retirement are complete and pay is set up.

While living in the village, tenants participate in training and one-hour sessions of required financial counseling. San Antonio chapter volunteers assist with this coaching, working one-on-one with the families each month to prepare a monthly budget, plan an emergency reserve, set financial goals and develop a debt reduction strategy if needed.

The village houses 27 wounded warriors and families receiving treatment at nearby Brooke Army Medical Center. The average stay for a family is six months.

In addition to this work with the village, the chapter provides services to the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries, local Boy and Girl Scout troops and the personal finance high school competition Junior Duel in Ol’ San Antonio.

The TSCPA San Antonio chapter will receive their award at the Texas Credit Union League annual meeting and award ceremony in Austin April 26.
