A cap-and-trade system is going to require a lot of careful tracking, especially when you throw in some extra wrinkles like the emission allowances that Congress is prepared to give away for free to many of the biggest polluters. Accountants in Europe have been doing some of this work for the past several years, as Europe is somewhat ahead of the U.S. in efforts to control greenhouse gas emissions. But there will still be plenty of work for U.S. accountants to do in this area. After all, we never did get that whole British thermal unit thing going over here.
