By Michael Cohn

The New Jersey Society of CPAs has been affected by Hurricane Sandy, which caused extensive destruction in New Jersey, New York and other states along the eastern seaboard.

Ralph Thomas

“Hurricane Sandy has caused unprecedented damage in New Jersey,” said NJSCPA CEO and executive director Ralph Thomas in a statement. “Our thoughts are with our 15,000 members across the state as many of them begin the long process of clean up and recovery. While work matters are secondary to more important things like family and friends, we want you to know that the NJSCPA is striving to get our programs and services up and running. Here is the latest information:

“Power is out at the NJSCPA office in Roseland. Our e-mail and Web site are down and the office itself is inaccessible. The society’s Web site URL is automatically redirecting people to this temporary page on the Ohio Society of CPAs Web site.

“We are evaluating whether to cancel CPE programming the remainder of the week. Please check back here periodically for more information.

“We have and will continue to post updates on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Please share those updates with your friends and followers.

“It’s unclear at this time how long it will take to get our lives back to ‘normal.’ We will do our best to keep you informed about professional news and the status of CPE programs as the day’s progress. Be sure to check this information page and our social media pages for updates.

“All of us at the NJSCPA wish safe days ahead for you, your family and staff.”

The society Web site is still down, but updated information will be available on a page on the Ohio society Web site.

Update: As of Thursday afternoon, the society's Web site and e-mail were back up and running.

I saw 1st hand the devastation in Sea Bright NJ yesterday. Sea Bright is the most northern Town on the Jersey Shore where I spent every summer of my youth and still go the beaches there today. (It is just south of Sandy Hook a national park). We were not able to cross the bridge from the town of Rumson due to gas mains that were compromised in Sea Bright. The town has 7 private beach clubs of which only one still sands. ALL of the other 6 were washed out to sea. I have been a member of a number of them going back to the mid 60's and it is absoutely heartbreaking to see absoutely nothing standing. There are parts of the Jersey Shore that will NEVER be the same! I am sure many more stories are coming it.
