Oscar Pistorius Reportedly Fined for Unpaid Taxes

South African runner Oscar Pistorius was reportedly fined a little under 1 million rand (or about $105,000) for unpaid taxes and paid his tax debts.

The double amputee, known as “the Blade Runner,” gained worldwide renown when he competed last summer at the Olympics in London, but was charged this year in the Valentine’s Day shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder at their home in Pretoria.

During a bail hearing, the Paralympic champion had to declare his assets, and the South African tax authorities learned of the discrepancy, according to the Associated Press, citing a report in a South African newspaper, the City Press. Pretorius paid the tax debt, and his uncle, Arnold Pretorius, sent a statement to the AP saying, “Oscar is tax compliant.”

However, there are conflicting accounts of Pretorius’s tax issues. Another South African press outlet, Eyewitness News, ran a follow-up story saying the earlier report that the South African Revenue Service had investigated Pistorius’s taxes after his bail hearing had been incorrect, and that Pretorius was fully tax compliant. It is not clear if their source was Pretorius’s uncle. The South African Revenue Service has not commented.
