In a letter to the Senate Finance Committee yesterday, the AICPA commended the committee for its efforts to combat identity theft and tax fraud in the Chairman’s Mark of a Bill to Prevent Identity Theft and Tax Refund Fraud, but spelled out concerns regarding the bill’s provision granting broad authority to the Department of the Treasury and the IRS to regulate paid tax return preparers.

Several accounting and tax professionals who made significant contributions to the accounting profession were honored at the recent National Society of Accountants (NSA) 70th Annual Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has started to accept applications for its College Scholarship Program, the largest undergraduate scholarship in the country. Students selected as Cooke Scholars will be awarded as much as $40,000 each year for four years for tuition, living expenses, books, and other required fees.

Data gathered from university websites regarding the percentage of undergraduates under 25, the acceptance rate, percentage involved in distance education were considered. These factors, along with flexible options such as starting dates, accelerated options, online degrees, and transfer policies were used to create the ranking.

The IMA's (Institute of Management Accountants) announced on Thursday that their 16th Annual Student Leadership Conference is now open for registration. This week happens to be National Payroll Week, so it’s a good time to sort through some of the misconceptions and lingering questions about payroll that accountants may be hearing from their business clients.

A newly released survey from the AICPA found that college students who rated themselves as having "excellent" or "good" personal financial management skills (57 percent) outweighed those who rated their skills as poor or terrible (12 percent) by a more than a five-to-one margin. However, almost half of college students (48 percent) reported having less than $100 in their bank account at some point in the last year.

The Securities and Exchange Commission will be poring over the comments it received on its recent proposal to toughen audit committee disclosures after the comment deadline expired Tuesday.
