  • On Wednesday, Thomson Reuters released their special report, Projected 2016 Inflation-Adjusted Tax Brackets and Other Key Figures, which demonstrates that, despite modest inflation in the past year, tax brackets will be adjusted upward in 2016, easing the tax burden slightly for many taxpayers. The adjustments will prevent the loss of tax benefits due solely to inflation.

  • The Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA) and the Georgia Food Bank Association have announced the results of the second annual Georgia Accounting Food Fight. During the friendly, two-week competition, accounting firms and industry accounting departments statewide raised food and funds for Georgia's eight regional food banks. The competition took place Aug. 17-28.

  • In a letter to the Senate Finance Committee yesterday, the AICPA commended the committee for its efforts to combat identity theft and tax fraud in the Chairman’s Mark of a Bill to Prevent Identity Theft and Tax Refund Fraud, but spelled out concerns regarding the bill’s provision granting broad authority to the Department of the Treasury and the IRS to regulate paid tax return preparers.

  • The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has started to accept applications for its College Scholarship Program, the largest undergraduate scholarship in the country. Students selected as Cooke Scholars will be awarded as much as $40,000 each year for four years for tuition, living expenses, books, and other required fees.

  • Best College Reviews, a ranking service for American colleges and universities, recently released a list of the Top 50 Adult Education Schools. Data gathered from university websites regarding the percentage of undergraduates under 25, the acceptance rate, percentage involved in distance education were considered. These factors, along with flexible options such as starting dates, accelerated options, online degrees, and transfer policies were used to create the ranking.
