ALABAMA

Ely Friedman was hired as a strategic advisor for the private equity and corporate advisory services group at Warren Averett, Birmingham.

CALIFORNIA

Gary Crouch, from Link, Murrel & Co., has joined White Nelson Diehl Evans, Irvine, as an audit partner, along with three other auditors from the firm, Annie Wu, McKenna James and William Drew.

NSBN partner Tayiika Dennis was appointed to the California Society of CPAs' State Board of Directors for 2017-19 by CalCPA state board chair Kathryn Johnson. Dennis is the former Los Angeles chapter president (2015-16) and has been a member of CalCPA since 2005.

CONNECTICUT

James Kroeker was reappointed vice chairman and Gary Buesser, portfolio manager and financial analyst, was appointed to the Financial Accounting Standards Board, Norwalk, with both terms effective July 1, 2018.

ENGLAND

Linus Ostberg was named senior manager of Moore Stephens US Tax Services Limited, a new collaboration and part of the Moore Stephens Doeren Mayhew Group, where he will operate out of the Moore Stephens London office. Moore Stephens US Tax Services Limited will provide U.S. tax services to individuals and businesses with a U.S. connection.

Lucas VanDeWoestyne, director and chief operating officer, was named partner at Apex CPAs & Consultants, St. Charles.

Trent Gazzaway was named national managing partner of quality and innovation services, a newly created role, at Grant Thornton, Chicago, where he will also serve on the firm’s senior leadership team. Gazzaway will oversee all quality control functions within the audit services practice. Bert Fox will succeed Gazzaway in his old role, taking over as national managing partner of professional standards.

MASSACHUSETTS

William Scally was hired as partner-in-charge of litigation services in the Boston office of Marcum. Scally, a valuation specialist, provides financial, economic, and statistical services, with a focus on equity and debt valuation, business enterprise valuation, business model due diligence and contract compliance.

MISSOURI

Anders CPAs + Advisors, St. Louis, hired six audit associates and seven tax associates. As new associates in the tax services group, the firm welcomed: Austin Bammer, Bobbie Dampier, Megan DeSherlia, Brittney Jostes, Connor Obermeier, Benjamin Patton and Jake Sauer. The six new associates in the audit and advisory services group are: Mary Taylor Endlsey, Raven Lawhorn, Abby McGrath, Ryan Morse, Katie Schmitz and Allison Wiese.

Kendrick Coleman, a staff accountant in the entrepreneurial services group at RubinBrown, St. Louis, received the Southern Illinois University Emerging Saluki Leader Award, given to alumni of the SIU College of Business who have graduated within the previous 15 years and are deserving of recognition for their outstanding achievements in business, academia, government, nonprofit organizations or service to their community. The award was presented at the annual College of Business Homecoming Reception on Oct. 13.

NEW JERSEY

Edward Mendlowitz, a partner at WithumSmith+Brown, New Brunswick, was inducted into the Estate Planning Hall of Fame by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils, and received the NAEPC's Accredited Estate Planner (Distinguished) Designation for 2017.

Nathan Wechsler & Co. principal Kim Pecora joined the board of the Pope Memorial Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Concord-Merrimack County, where she was also elected treasurer.

NEW YORK

VIRGINIA

Jennifer Lehman was appointed chief executive officer at Hantzmon Wiebel, Charlottesville. Lehman, who previously served as chief operating officer, is the first female CEO of the firm. She succeeds Phillip Shiflett, who served as CEO since 2007, and will continue to work with the firm’s clients on a full-time basis.

The Virginia Society of CPAs announced staff promotions: Laura Cobb to senior manager, innovation and leadership; Richard Gordon to senior manager, member services and operations; Julia Henderson to membership development director; Dian Jones to senior manager, finance and administration; Linda Newsom-McCurdy to senior director, learning; and Lauren Simonetti to student and membership engagement specialist. Dee Mirando-Gould was appointed managing director of the new technical accounting consulting group of Moss Adams, Seattle. Mirando-Gould has more than 25 years of experience addressing issues like revenue recognition, stock-based compensation, debt and equity instruments, derivatives, business combinations and lease accounting.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Deborah Walker, national director of compensation and benefits at Cherry Bekaert, received the 2017 Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest honor in the area of taxation, bestowed by the Tax Division of the American institute of CPAs. The annual award is in honor of Arthur J. Dixon, a CPA with an outstanding record of service to the tax profession and the institute’s tax division. He was also chairman of the AICPA's Tax Executive Committee from 1977 to 1980.
