AICPA adds new director of international relations

The American Institute of CPAs has named Gary M. Scopes as director of international relations.

In his new role, Scopes will serve as liaison for the AICPA's international activities and strategic initiatives. He will report to James A. O'Malley, institute senior vice president of public affairs.

Prior to joining the AICPA, Scopes served as U.S. technical representative for the governing body of the International Federation of Accountants. Scopes has served as an executive director of the Institute of Management Accountants, the Texas Society of CPAs and the Society of Louisiana CPAs, and as president of the CPA Society Executives Association.

While at the IMA, Scopes served on the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council, which advises the Financial Accounting Standards Board. He also assisted the IMA's participation in the establishment of the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission.

"Gary brings a world of knowledge to the CPA profession that will help establish a presence for the AICPA internationally," O'Malley said.

Scopes previously consulted on international projects sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development and the Asian Development Bank. He helped establish the auditing profession in several countries, implemented standards and ethics enforcement, and consulted on the development of a long-range strategic plan for the CPA profession.

He also worked with the International Accounting Standards Board in assisting the translation and adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards.

Recently, Scopes managed a consulting practice that specializes in ethics program implementation and training in support of Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. He teaches the AICPA ethics course for several state CPA societies, as well as other CPE programs.
