AICPA appoints BDO partner to chair FinREC

The American Institute of CPAs has named Angela Newell, a national assurance partner at BDO USA’s Dallas office, as the new chair of the AICPA’s Financial Reporting Executive Committee, succeeding Crowe partner Jim Dolinar.

The Financial Reporting Executive Committee, or FinREC for short, is the AICPA’s official voice on financial reporting matters and develops nonauthoritative, industry accounting guidance. Members of the committee come from business and industry, public practice and academia.

At BDO, Newell has worked on various audit engagement teams and helped the firm deal with the new revenue recognition and leasing standards. Before joining BDO, she was the vice president and corporate controller at Fiesta Restaurant Group in Dallas and vice president of revenue assurance and corporate controller at Clearwire in Bellevue, Washington. She started her audit career at Arthur Andersen.

“I am honored to be recognized by the AICPA leadership and am grateful for the opportunity to represent such an influential institution,” Newell said in a statement. “As chair, I look forward to furthering the Institute’s mission of serving the public interest by improving financial reporting.”

She will be succeeding Dolinar, who has chaired FinREC since 2014, after the committee’s next meeting in May. “Angela brings a unique skill set to FinREC, having experiences in both public accounting and industry, coupled with her deep knowledge of GAAP,” Dolinar stated. “She is a great choice for the next chair of FinREC.”
