Avalara Acquires EZtax, Launches Returns Excise Pro

Avalara has announced EZtax, provider of tax compliance solutions for the telecommunications industry. EZtax offers cloud-based solutions that address the telecom market’s complex tax laws and regulations, including a flagship product with fully automated capabilities for accurately calculating and filing taxes due on their services in the U.S. and Canada.

“As the telecom industry rapidly adopts more data-centric services such as VoIP, broadband and wireless, tax agencies are actively considering legislation that could impose additional tax liabilities on an already highly taxed and complex industry,” stated Scott McFarlane, founder and CEO of Avalara. “EZtax eliminates these complexities and advances our strategy of helping customers in every industry to simplify and automate tax compliance in cloud-based solutions.”

Avalara will be leveraging EZTax’s tax library, continuously updated by a team of experience telecom tax experts.

“As a market leader for cloud-based tax compliance automation, Avalara is the perfect complement for EZtax and our customers,” stated Tim Lopatofsky, founder and CEO of EZtax.  “Their platform, vision, and highly-effective sales and marketing engine will help accelerate our business and meet the demand in the fast-growing worldwide telecom market.”

In addition to the EZTax acquisition, Avalara announced the launch of Avalara Returns Excise Pro, a new online service for small to mid-sized fuel distributors, suppliers and terminal operators to quickly and accurately file bulk fuel tax returns.

The new offering uses the same platform as Avalara’s flagship fuel compliance solution Returns Excise Enterprise but is designed for smaller companies that typically file in fewer states.

“Smaller fuel distributors and suppliers have been asking us for a compliance solution tailored to their needs,” stated Matt Tormollen, executive vice president and general manager of Avalara’s Excise & CertCapture Division.  “We’re excited to introduce a tax automation solution that is cost-effective, while also providing comprehensive coverage for all major US federal, state, and municipal returns.”
