Avalara to Acquire New Horizons Systems

Web-based sales tax management software service provider Avalara said it has agreed to acquire New Horizons Systems, a provider of business geographic and tax jurisdiction assignment software.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Avalara said the deal would help it accelerate delivery of next-generation services. New Horizon Systems specializes in geographic tax determination, which will allow Avalara provide sales tax management services with detailed geographic mapping.

“The data sets provided by New Horizons Systems create geographic boundary files that are consumable using map viewers,” said Rory Rawlings, chief tax automation officer of Avalara, in a statement. “By layering shape files for state, county, city and special taxing district boundaries onto a map, business professionals can visually see the intersection of these geographic boundaries and the resulting highly accurate taxing regions.”

Avalara said the mapping technology would help businesses charge more accurate sales taxes based on the correct tax jurisdiction. That could help them reduce the risk of audit penalties and even of class action lawsuits.
