Brigham Young U. Wins Deloitte Contest

A team of accounting students from Brigham Young University has captured first place honors as winners of the Deloitte National Student Case Study Competition.

The 13th annual contest, sponsored by the Deloitte Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Deloitte LLP, awarded second prize to a team of students from Notre Dame. Four other colleges and universities also participated in the competition: the University of California - Berkeley, the University of Connecticut, the University of Illinois and Morehouse College.

The competition, held in Scottsdale, Ariz., awarded $10,000 to the first-place school, with each team member receiving a $2,000 scholarship. The second-place school will receive $5,000 and a $1,000 scholarship for each student. The four other finalist teams receive $2,500 for their school and a $500 scholarship for each student.

Supported by a dedicated faculty advisor and a manager from Deloitte, the teams of undergraduate accounting students work to provide solutions to complex case studies involving real-world financial accounting issues. Each student team then presents their case results to a panel of active and retired Deloitte partners, who assume the roles of a client company's senior management or audit committee members. At the end of the seminar, the panel selects the student teams that best identify the relevant accounting issues and most effectively present their case.
