BIOENVISION TAPS DELOITTE: Bioenvision, a New York-based concern that specializes in cancer treatment, named Big Four firm Deloitte as its auditor, replacing Grant Thornton.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the audit reports by Grant Thornton did not have any adverse opinions, but the audit firm did, however, recommend that the company strengthen its internal controls.

Grant also advised Bioenvision about a material weakness as a result of inadequate staffing in its accounting department.

HUDSON UNITED ENGAGES GT: Hudson United Bancorp hired national firm Grant Thornton as its independent accountant, replacing Ernst & Young in that position.

The Big Four firm, however, will remain as the company's tax advisor. The audit committee recommended the change in auditors.

CHECKERS DRIVE-IN JETTISONS KPMG: Fast-food operator and franchisor Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc. dismissed its auditor, Big Four firm KPMG, and replaced it with Grant Thornton.

In a filing with the SEC, the multi-unit company, which offers double drive-through service, didn't state a reason for dismissing KPMG.

The Big Four firm did, however, issue an adverse opinion on the effectiveness of the company's internal controls.

Except for the effectiveness opinion, the company said that KPMG's reports on its financials contained no disagreements on any matter of accounting principles or practices.
