He will succeed Tom Gerke, who will continue to serve as interim president and CEO until then. Gerke will remain general counsel and chief administrative officer. H&R Block's previous CEO Bill Cobb retired at the end of July after serving since 2011.

Jones has close to 30 years in executive management. Most recently he served as president of ride sharing at Uber; prior to that was executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Target Corp. from 2012 to 2016. He helped lead the brand and business back from the retail giant’s 2013 data breach. At Target, Jones “helped design a more guest-centric approach, fostered a more open and agile culture, modernized core capabilities, launched digital products like Cartwheel and served as Target’s head of guest experience and communications,” according to H&R Block.

Prior to Target, Jones held executive and leadership roles for The Gap, Coca-Cola Co. and Leo Burnett.
