Houston CPAs to Honor Past NASBA Chair

The Houston CPA Society will honor past National Association of State Boards of Accountancy chair Billy Atkinson and his wife Donnelle as honorary co-chairs of its 2012 Scholarship Extravaganza fundraising event, to be held Saturday, Feb. 18.

The annual event raises funds for accounting scholarships and the CPAs Helping Schools program. Past extravaganzas have raised more than $2.9 million over 24 years.

A former Houston society president, Billy Atkinson recently retired as an audit partner at PwC US, and has served as chairman of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. In addition, he has served as presiding officer of the Texas State Board of Accountancy, on the executive board of the Texas Society of CPAs, and as a trustee of the TSCPA's Education Foundation. He has also served on the President's Advisory Council at Texas A&M University since 1998, and has been a member of the Accounting Department Advisory Council within the College of Business at A&M for more than 25 years.

Atkinson and his wife established the Billy M. & Donnelle Atkinson Scholarship in Accounting at Texas A&M.  PwC also established a separate $150,000 Billy M. Atkinson/PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholarship in Accounting at Texas A&M, recognizing Billy's long-time interest in accounting education and students.

This year's event, "Mardi Gras Madness," will be held at the Hilton University of Houston. It raises funds for accounting scholarships and the CPAs Helping Schools program, with $149,000 already raised in pledges and gifts. Tickets are $150, with packages starting at $1,000.
