Kansas Firms Merge, Add ERISA Expertise

Kansas accounting firm Summers Spencer & Co. has absorbed Overland Park, Kan.-based accounting firm James F. Gillespie CPA through a merger, reported the Kansas City Business Journal.

Announced Wednesday, the merger was completed in June. SS&C added Jim Gillespie as partner and his firm’s three staff members.

SS&C vice president Skyler Fairchild said Gillespie’s Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) auditing experience would be beneficial to the firm.

“When an employee benefits plan reaches a certain size, an audit is required [under ERISA],” Fairchild told the Business Journal. “It can be quite complicated, so you need experience in that field to handle this. Jim [Gillespie] has been doing it for 30 years.”

SS&C now has more than 40 employees, 20 of which are CPAs, in the four Kansas offices of Lenexa, Lawrence, Topeka and Meriden.

“The resources at SS&C allow us to provide additional services to current clients and to say ‘yes’ to prospective clients,” Gillespie said in a statement. “In fact, in the short time we have been merged, we are auditing an additional 401(k) plan and proposing on another, as well as a local union, a pension, a health and welfare fund, and a vacation fund.”
