Kaplan Buys Test Prep Firm, U.S. CPA Success

Education provider Kaplan Inc. has acquired the Canadian test preparation firm U.S. CPA Success, based in Toronto, Ont.Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In the United States, Kaplan already provides preparation for the CPA Exam, along with training for a variety of other professional tests and certifications. Kaplan CPA Review, which announced in mid-May that it would release new CPA review materials, provides self-study materials in online, CD-ROM, video and textbook formats -- as well as live classroom instruction programs.

U.S. CPA Success, formally known as U.S. ExamPrep Inc., offers intensive preparation sessions for the U.S. Uniform CPA Exam at a handful of locations in major Canadian cities, along with guided self-study programs.

U.S. CPA Success will become part of Kaplan Canada, based in Toronto. Kaplan last month announced acquisitions in Australia and a joint venture in China, and now has schools in more than 30 countries.

Kaplan, which had 2006 revenue of nearly $1.7 billion, is a subsidiary of The Washington Post Co. The Post said that revenue at its Kaplan division rose 16 percent from year-ago results last quarter, accounting for about $476 million of its $986 million in total sales last quarter.
