Neal D. Spencer, partner-in-charge of BKD LLP's Kentucky and southern Indiana offices, will take over the reins of the entire firm this summer.

Spencer will succeed BKD managing partner William E. Fingland Jr., following a transition period in early 2007. As managing partner, Spencer will be responsible for the firm's overall management and leadership, overseeing its financial management and strategic planning, as well as serving as the firm's spokesman.

Now based in Louisville, Ky., Spencer will relocate to Springfield next month to begin the transition process, and Fingland will step down on June 1.

Fingland, who has led the firm for the past decade and oversaw the 2001 merger of Baird, Kurtz & Dobson and Olive LLP to create BKD, will remain a firm partner and assume a newly created chairman title. In that role, he will concentrate pm addressing issues within the accounting profession and strengthening international affiliations.

BKD’s partners and principals elected Spencer to the top position in November 2006. He has spent the past 10 years heading up BKD’s trio of Kentucky locations, as well as the firm’s Evansville, Ind., office. A member of BKD Health Care Group and an active client service partner, Spencer has been with the firm for 21 years.

It will be the fourth leadership change in BKD’s history. Fingland succeeded James O. Glauser in 1997, who had become the firm’s second managing partner in 1986.  Herald Ambler was elected the first managing partner in 1976. Fingland began his public accounting career with BKD in 1976, eventually becoming partner-in-charge of the firm's Tulsa, Okla., office for nine years before serving as BKD's first national director of health care services.

BKD ranked No. 10 on Accounting Today's 2006 list of Top 100 Firms, with revenues of $258 million.
