The New Jersey Society of CPAs' Scholarship Fund has granted $230,000 in scholarships for local high school and college students.
Recipients were mailed their awards this year in lieu of a ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scholarships were awarded based on academic performance, essays and interviews.
Thirty-six college students will receive $6,500, one-year scholarships. Recipients are accounting students attending New Jersey colleges or universities, currently in their junior or senior year, and entering an accounting-related graduate program.
Thirteen high school students will receive $1,500, one-year scholarships. The students are college-bound New Jersey high school seniors intending to major in accounting or obtain a concentration in accounting.
Five awards were also distributed on behalf of the American Institute of CPAs and the National Association of Black Accountants, as well as various awards honoring a particular individual or company.
“The scholarships are a great way to encourage young professionals to pursue a career in accounting and to assist with some of the financial burdens in getting there,” said Chris Lovasz, president of the NJCPA Scholarship Fund and managing director at Deloitte & Touche, in a statement. “Giving back to the next generation of CPAs is extremely rewarding.”
“It is my pleasure to acknowledge such worthy individuals and the hard work they have put into their studies," added Ralph Albert Thomas (pictured), CEO and executive director at the NJCPA, in a statement. "They will truly be a benefit to the accounting profession, and we are pleased to be able to assist them in this way.
