PCPS Creates Tool for Firms Advising Not-For-Profit Boards

New York (Sept. 1, 2004) -- The PCPS membership section of the AICPA has created a PowerPoint tool for CPA firms that work with not-for-profit clients.

The “Not-for-Profit Board Member Orientation" tool is a presentation on corporate governance and effective board management that firms can deliver in face-to-face meetings with current and potential clients.

“Sarbanes-Oxley has refocused attention on governance issues in all organizations, including not-for-profits,” said Richard Caturano, chair of the PCPS Executive Committee. “In particular, many not-for-profit boards are lacking members with the appropriate financial acumen. This presentation helps CPA firms open a dialogue with their clients about how the organization is managed, and what the roles and responsibilities of individual board members should be.”

The presentation provides critical information on a variety of subjects for not-for-profit organization board members, including: how not-for-profits differ from other organizations; the responsibilities of a board member; what it means to be financially literate; major legal and regulatory issues; how to identify and mitigate organizational risk; and performance measurement.

Firms can customize the presentation by adding their firm name and logo, and by adding their own specific expertise to the materials. Speaker notes are included to guide the discussion.

Members can access the material for free by going to www.pcps.org, clicking on “Member Resources” and then clicking on “Not-for-Profit Resources.” Non-PCPS members can purchase the presentation for $25 at www.cpa2biz.com.
