SD Mayer to merge in TNT

SD Mayer & Associates, a firm in San Francisco, is adding TNT Inc. CPAs, headquartered in Redwood City, California, effective July 1.

The deal promises to expand SD Mayer’s presence further in Silicon Valley, bringing in more than 100 high-net-worth and business clients. The firm recently expanded its Menlo Park office to include a tax team, alongside its original space for its other practices. SD Mayer’s San Francisco headquarters houses over 40 staff members who offer tax, audit, consulting, wealth management, outsourced accounting and other services. SD Mayer earned $7 million in annual revenue and has 35 staff members and four partners. TNT will add a few staff members and revenue of $500,000.

Accounting firms have stepped up their merger activity in recent weeks as the economy rebounds thanks to the expanding rollout of COVID-19 vaccines to control the pandemic, which dampened M&A activity last year.

TNT was founded by Mike and Rebecca Teutschel in 2013. They both used to work with SD Mayer founder and managing partner Stephen Mayer at a previous firm, Burr Pilger Mayer. “Rebecca and I have worked with Steve for over 30 years, so it was natural that we would turn to him and his firm as we started the process of winding down our schedules,” said Mike Teutschel in a statement Monday. “I believe that our high-net-worth individual and business clients will enjoy access to the wide breadth of services and resources offered by SD Mayer.”

“The band is back together,” Mayer said in a statement. “Mike and Rebecca joined us at BPM, the other firm I founded and ran for 25 years, and now they’ve turned to us at SD Mayer, as they look forward to their retirement. Tax is our largest practice group, with two convenient office locations, and our expertise is second to none.”

SD Mayer also announced Monday that Helen Johnson has joined the firm. She also worked previously with Mike Teutshel, as well as with SD Mayer tax partner Joanne Wiggins-Barros, at a previous firm, Brown Adams Agbayani in Mountain View, California.

“Helen will be the glue that joins us” Mayer added, “Having worked with our tax partner will help her onboard quickly, and her familiarity with Mike’s clients will help with the transition from TNT to SD Mayer. It’s a huge win.”

Johnson will be working from SD Mayer’s Menlo Park office with Wiggins-Barros, focused on her own clients, along with those brought in through the TNT merger.
