SEC Taps Markel as Top Enforcement Accountant

Washington (June 20, 2003) -- The Securities and Exchange Commission appointed agency veteran Susan Markel as chief accountant of its enforcement division.

She succeeds Charles Niemeier, who was named last year as a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. In her new role she will be charged with advising the regulator’s enforcement unit on all accounting and auditing investigations.

She reports to Stephen Cutler, director of the enforcement division.

Markel joined the SEC in 1994 and has been involved with a number of high-profile investigations, including those of Cendant and WorldCom.
