SurePayroll Offers Android App

Payroll service provider SurePayroll has released an Android version of its payroll software for smart phones and other devices that run Google’s Android software.

With the Droid app, employees of companies that use SurePayroll can view their pay stubs on a Droid phone, and administrators can also log into the payroll system. The Droid app follows up on an iPhone app that SurePayroll introduced earlier this year (see SurePayroll Creates iPhone App). The company, which is now part of Paychex, has been steadily upgrading the iPhone app as well, according to SurePayroll president and CEO Michael Alter.

“It’s just an app on your phone,” he said Wednesday. “You hit one button and you see all your past pay stubs.”

The company has also been upgrading its reseller channel for accountants. “Accountants can refer business to us, or they can resell business,” said Alter. “Today they basically have the same functionality that’s available to one of our major banking partners also available to a small accounting firm, for really no capital investment, and it’s ready to go in a matter of minutes.” Accountants can use their own branding and logo in the system, and they can set their own retail pricing.

Separately, the company also released the results last week of its monthly Small Business Scorecard, which showed that hiring had declined for the second consecutive month in 18 of the top 35 metropolitan statistical areas. The scorecard is based on small businesses running SurePayroll’s software.

The August results showed year-to-date hiring declining 2.6 percent, and year-to-date paycheck size down 0.3 percent. In addition, optimism among small business owners stayed flat at 48 percent after plummeting to 47 percent in July from 67 percent in June.

The company has begun tracking the statistics by metropolitan area, and sees improvements in hiring and pay in some cities, such as St. Louis, Mo., and Greensboro, N.C. However, Cincinnati and Cleveland, Ohio, seem to be lagging.
