Tax Bill Bankrupts U.K. Pop Star

British singer and reality TV star Kerry Katona has been forced into bankruptcy after trying to pay off her tax bill.

The former lead singer of the band Atomic Kitten was unable to pay the remaining £82,000 ($164,000) of her tax bill of £417,000 ($834,000) to the U.K.'s tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs. The High Court registrar gave the 27-year-old celebrity an extra hour after her attorney said she needed a little extra time for a check to clear in her bank account, but the court declared her bankrupt after the hour elapsed. The attorney plans to have the bankruptcy order overturned next week after the funds show up in her account, according to the U.K. newspaper, The Scotsman.

Katona departed the all-girl band Atomic Kitten in 2001 and later appeared in the reality TV series "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here."
