Thomson Acquires Online CPE Provider

Thomson Tax & Accounting, a Thomson Corp. business, has acquired PassOnline, a provider of electronic continuing professional education.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PassOnline, which provides more than 240 electronic courses, will become a part of the CPE business of Thomson Tax & Accounting. Based in Leander, Texas, PassOnline already offers more than 2,200 hours of CPE training for professionals working in accounting and auditing, taxation, management, and professional development. In recent years, the company has touted its ethics training courses for accountants.

Thomson said that the acquisition will allow it to expand its electronic CPE course offerings in the professional accounting and tax market. Existing CPE brands -- including PPC, RIA, Gear Up, MicroMash, PPC-Bell Learning and Quickfinder -- will continue to be offered, but now from a single source.

PASSOnline has been a provider of CPE since 1990, and is recognized by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards as a qualified sponsor of continuing education credits. Its courses are currently made available on diskette or CD, as well as directly via download over the Internet.
