Virginia CPAs Pick New Leaders

The Virginia Society of CPAs has selected Bradford R. Jones as chair of its board of directors for fiscal year 2010-2011.

Jones, principal and owner of PBGH, LLP, in Fredericksburg, has a long history of leadership in the VSCPA and the CPA profession. During his term as chair, Jones plans to continue supporting the VSCPA’s top five strategies and maintain an intense focus on increasing the VSCPA’s membership. Jones also has an important agenda item of his own — to promote CPAs as top candidates for leadership. 

“CPAs are the people I’d like to have sitting at the head of the table,” Jones said. “CPAs need to be leaders — because we’re CPAs first.”

Jones has taught credited accounting courses at Strayer University, and as an adjunct instructor for Germanna Community College, he has taught a variety of accounting and tax courses. He has also taught various continuing professional education courses to CPAs across the state.

His other leadership posts and activities include president for the VSCPA Battlefield Chapter; service on various VSCPA committees; board member for a number of local nonprofit organizations in Fredericksburg; and active membership in the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Damon L. DeSue of Dollar Tree Management, Inc., in Chesapeake, will serve as chair-elect of the VSCPA. The following VSCPA members were named vice chairs: Stephen M. Gay of Harris, Harvey, Neal & Co., LLP, in Danville; Lisa C. Germano of Actuarial Benefits & Design Company in Midlothian; John B. Montoro of Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, LLP, in Richmond; and Tom Rosengarth of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater.

At-large board members include: Maria T. Bridges of James M. Bridges, Ltd., CPAs, in Dale City; Nishon R. Evans, CPA, NJVC in Vienna; Carl W. Hoecker of the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Capitol Police, in Washington, D.C.; R. Chapin Jones of Goodman & Company in Glen Allen; Clare K. Levison of Alliant Tech Systems, Inc., in Radford; Roy D. Peters of the Central Virginia Foodbank in Richmond; James M. Shepherd of Kuehl, Shepherd & Associates, PC, in Richmond; Barbara L. Smith of Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, LLP, in Virginia Beach; Mark A. VanDeveer of Mark A. VanDeveer PC in Virginia Beach; and Colette Y. Wilson, of Cotton & Company, LLP, in Alexandria.

In addition, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation selected a slate of officers and members of the board of directors for the 2010–2011 fiscal year.

Sean R. O'Connell of PBGH, LLP, in Fairfax, is serving as chair of the board. O'Connell has been an adjunct professor of accounting at the University of Mary Washington, and has also taught courses for the VSCPA and at Germanna Community College.

The following VSCPA members were named vice chairs of the Foundation Board: L. Darlene Selz of the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond; and Bradley P. Nicklin of Beers + Cutler, PLLC, in Vienna. VSCPA president and CEO Stephanie R. Peters will continue the role of secretary/treasurer.
