Books for your holiday wish list

Here is a list of my favorite books, ranked in no particular order. If you are looking for that special gift for a boss or coworker (and don’t want to shell out the big bucks) one of these might just be the perfect match.

1)     Firm Forward: A Journey From the Land of Compliance to the World of Reliance by Edi Osborne: A business fable about a newly appointed managing partner who has to deal with a crisis upon his promotion. It’s a story of how to stay relevant in the new workplace. An easy, inspiring read about moving an old school firm forward.

2)   Look, Lead, Love, Learn: Four Steps to Better Business, a Better Life and Conquering Complexity in the Process by Bill Sheridan: Who doesn’t love Bill Sheridan? As chief communication officer of the Maryland Association of CPAs, Bill is an avid blogger and social media enthusiast. This book is a collection of his posts from the MACPA blog—covering everything from leadership to living in a new social mobile world.

3)   Beyond the Days of the Giants: Solving the Crisis of Growth and Succession in Today’s CPA Firms by Paul D. Fisher: Everyone is talking about succession … still. And we will continue to do so for some time. This is a handy guide that will help you take your firm into the next decade.

4)   The 7 Non-Negotiables of Winning: Tying Soft Traits to Hard Results by David K. Williams: Leadership and trust go hand-in-hand with productivity, and this book explores the seven non-negotiables—respect, belief, trust, loyalty, commitment, courage and gratitude—as must-haves for any company calling themselves innovative. 

5)    On Being a Cop by Jim & Jay Padar: Yes, this is a plug for my father and brother–in-law’s new book. It has nothing to do with accounting but it’s a book anyone looking to be inspired can enjoy. It’s a great collection of 53 real stories written by two Chicago police officers–with heart and pride.
