Brigham Young University’s five-student team won top honors at the Deloitte FanTAXtic national tax case study competition earlier this month, receiving $2,000 in scholarships per student and a $10,000 institutional award. The Deloitte FanTAXtic finals included nine teams from colleges and universities across the U.S., top spot by working on a complex, issues-driven business tax case.

The Deloitte FanTAXtic competition originated in 2002, designed to familiarize students with the tax profession early in their academic careers. The interactive competition includes role-playing and presentations to help students better understand the experiences and challenges they can expect from a career in tax. The finals are held at Deloitte University in Westlake, Texas.

“I am continually impressed by the caliber of the students participating in this competition,” said Carl Allegretti, chairman and CEO of Deloitte Tax, in a statement. “The creative thinking and teamwork on display are energizing and hold great promise for the future of our profession. Congratulations to all of the teams for their hard work in navigating some of today’s most complex business problems.”

Taking second place in the competition was The University of Texas, receiving $1,000 per student and an institutional award of $5,000. The Ohio State University won third place, receiving $500 per student and $2,500 for their school.

All other competing teams in Deloitte FanTAXtic were awarded honorable mentions, including: College of William and Mary, Michigan State University, New York University, University of Iowa, University of North Carolina – Charlotte and University of Southern California.

“This competition allows us to bridge academic and real-life professional experiences necessary for students to succeed in and out of the classroom," stated Carol Lindstrom, president of the Deloitte Foundation. “We are excited for this year’s participants who used their technical, interpersonal and communication skills to deliver excellent solutions to the case."

To qualify in the national competition, each participating teams won the Deloitte FanTAXtic contest in their respective U.S. regions. Prior to the final FanTAXtic competition held Jan. 16-18, 2015, more than 77 teams from 54 colleges and universities participated in regional qualifier events held in 14 cities throughout the U.S. Deloitte Tax sponsors the competition, with program management support by the Deloitte Foundation.
