Apparently accountants aren’t the only ones about to face a mass retirement exodus.

The nation could lose roughly one-third of its teachers during the next four years, according to an April report by the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future.

Worse, recruiting won’t help.

Beginning teacher attrition rates have been rising for more than a decade. Some estimates show more than 33 percent of teachers leave the profession within three years.

The light at the end of the tunnel can apply to accounting firms as well: most Boomers still want to work after retirement, just not full time.

The report suggests forming teams of veterans and beginners now to share experiences across generations.

This type of collaboration allows Boomers to remain involved and could lower the cost of training new hires because those Boomers could serve as the trainers.

It’s important to get these groups used to working together as soon as possible instead of waiting until the retirement clock hits the 11th hour.
