KPMG bets books on Mickelson, Lewis for literacy

KPMG announced that it will donate 5,000 new books to schools local to each of this season's  tournament victories by the firm’s sponsored golfers, PGA Tour star Phil Mickelson and LPGA No. 1-ranked American Stacy Lewis.

The Big Four firm kicked off the program, part of its Family for Literacy initiative, by honoring Mickelson’s victory at the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open with its first donation to the Solano Elementary School in Phoenix, which KPMG volunteers will also refurbish.

“We applaud Phil for winning the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open,” said KPMG chairman and CEO John Veihmeyer in a statement.  “Going forward we will commemorate his and Stacy’s wins by making contributions to a truly worthwhile cause – youth literacy. We understand that the toughest roadblock to children’s literacy is access to books and we created this new win program as yet another way to help support the on-going efforts of our KPMG people and their families who have done so much to support First Book and KPMG’s Family for Literacy.”

Family for Literacy began five years ago in partnership with nonprofit First Book, and is led by the spouses of KPMG partners and employees. In addition to the more than two million books the program has delivered, KPMG’s volunteers visit classrooms and read to children.

The initiative also teamed up with Mickelson and First Book to create KPMG’s “Blue for Books” campaign, which donates money to the nonprofit for every purchase of the golfer’s blue KPMG tour hat.

“I’m so proud to be part of this KPMG literacy initiative and I’m thrilled that we will be donating 5,000 new books to the Solano Elementary School in honor of Phil’s win this weekend,” stated Lisa Daniels, managing partner of KPMG’s Phoenix office. “It’s part of our drive to provide new books for children in need and inspire a lifetime love of reading. Our local office volunteers are also excited about the opportunity to refurbish the school’s library to give kids an improved environment to learn and grow.”
