Colorado firm raises funds for children with disabilities

August 22, 2012

Gary Hansen, president of Loveland, Colo.-based financial planning services provider Financial Strategies of Colorado, has joined forces with David and Shawna Hodges, founders of nonprofit Downs on the Farm, to raise money and awareness for children with disabilities through the firm.

Specifically, their efforts will fund the building of a heated handicap restroom facility and retreat area on the farm for the parents of children with disabilities, in order to facilitate continual activity and individual therapy sessions.

The Hodges opened five-acre ranchette Downs on the Farm, located in Berthoud, in 2009 for special needs children and their families. As parents of a handicapped child, the couple wanted to provide special needs children with a therapeutic environment that encouraged building core strength, improving balance and lowering anxiety.

Hansen, who has spent time mentoring a young adult with Downs Syndrome named Tyson, was drawn to the cause.

"Getting to know Grady, the Hodges' son, and spending time with my friend Tyson has brought me so much joy and inspiration,” Hansen stated. “Both of these individuals have more pure love in their hearts than just about anyone else I know. I knew that if there was something I could do to provide disabled children and their families with the support and resources they need to improve their quality of life, I had to get involved.”

Hansen and Financial Strategies of Colorado have currently helped collect several thousand dollars toward DOTF’s $45,000 goal. Donation progress, and more information about Down on the Farm and how to donate, can be found at
