The Scholarship competition asked high-school seniors and college students to write a 1,000 to 2,000-word essay on one of two provided writing prompts regarding tax reform in the U.S. The first prompt asked to provide a three-point plan to fix taxes in America, while the second challenged students to create a plan on educating young people on taxes in an interesting way. Students submitted their essays by Tax Day, April 18, 2016.
The second-place scholarship prize of $1,500 goes to Liz Wolfe of Washington, D.C., a junior at the College of William and Mary, who currently majors in government. Two honorable mention prizes of $500 will be additionally be awarded to Zachary VandeGuchte and Regen Ainley of Grand Rapids and Saline, Mich., respectively.
The scholarship winnings are given directly to each student’s institutions to cover their collegiate materials and tuition fees.
TRI’s essay contest was first announced at the annual International Students for Liberty Conference in February of this year. TRI executive director Dan Johnson spoke of the need to engage young people in the nation’s tax-reform discussion, stating, “Student conferences and scholarship opportunities are keys to reaching the next generation of leaders. We know that young people are starting to feel the economic effects of the burdensome US tax system, [and] we want to give students a chance to voice their concerns and propose real solutions.”
