OSCPA launches women's initiative

The Ohio Society of CPAs has launched a new initiative to engage women CPAs and provide them with the resources to achieve greater success.

The women’s initiative is in response to a 2012 OSCPA membership survey in which 80 percent of the more than 1,400 respondents said it was somewhat or very important for the organization to develop programs and activities specifically for female members. According to the survey, OSCPA members want programs and events focused on women’s interests, work/life balance strategies, leadership development and career path resources.

The initiative was  developed following the American Institute of CPAs survey that found while women represent 50 percent of all CPAs, just 19 percent are firm shareholders/partners and less than 9 percent are chief financial officers in business.

“The women’s initiative is an opportunity for OSCPA to respond to the changing profession,” stated Marie Brilmyer, member of the women’s initiative committee and OSCPA’s executive board. “While the issues facing women today are certainly not gender or profession specific, OSCPA is able to provide resources and support to its members to face the issues surrounding work/life balance, flexible work arrangements, and career advancement head on.”

The OSCPA kicked off the initiative with the creation of a private LinkedIn group and plans to host five receptions throughout the state.

“OSCPA’s women’s initiative has the potential to support CPAs in new and important ways,” said president and CEO Scott Wiley in a statement. “It provides a platform for our members to connect and build community around common interests and professional goals.”
