St. Mary's offering "big data" degree

As the world starts to rely more and more on digital data, a fertile job market has emerged for those who will analyze and report on those statistics. In response to this, St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, has formed a new bachelor of business administration degree program in accounting and data analytics.

“The amount of data in our world has been exploding, and analyzing large data sets – so-called 'big data' – will become a key basis of competition, underpinning new waves of productivity growth, innovation, and consumer surplus,” said theMcKinsey Global Institute, an international management consulting firm, in a school statement.

The new program will see students complete a 120-hour accounting major, with an additional 30 hours of data analytics and information systems courses also required. The program will take four to five years to complete.

Promisingly, the median salary for entry-level data analytics positions is $48,000,according to PayScale. Industries such as financial services, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing and government are all actively seeking data analysts.

The data analytics degree also helps students who wish to take the CPA examination after graduation, since the exam requires a bachelor’s degree with 150 hours, including 30 hours of upper division accounting courses.
